The layout of the room wasn't the best for families. The 12 year old practically lived on the flow rider. They had fun things around the pool, too. The lazy river was truly the highlight for the kids. We found the food to be quite decent (very good for an all inclusive - and really good for a Dominican Republic all inclusive). Even though I feel our butler was worthless, I still thought the DC privilege was a nice thing to have. We did the diamond club, swim out suites. And my husband and I moved over to Now Onyx once they left. We stayed at the Royalton Bavaro with the kids/grandkids. But I like to get other people's take on it. But when it comes down to it, if they are pretty equal on food and things for the kid, I may prefer to save some money and buy them a nice excursion. But if your concerns were food #1, activities for the 12 year old #2.what would you choose? Would NOW Onyx suffice? If so, is preferred club worth the extra $900 (total) for the 6 of us? I am happy to spend the extra money on either preferred club or on the Royalton Bavaro if it's worth it. I understand it is a matter of preference.

Or, I can upgrade to the Preferred Club in a Junior Suite Partial Ocean View and still save $1,000 over the Royalton (for all 6 of us, 5 nights). I can book a regular Junior Suite Swim Out room for $1900 less than the Royalton Bavaro room mentioned above. But, it is also at a substantial cost savings. I get that it is a more budget-oriented brand than the Royalton. But as I was digging some more, I came across the NOW Onyx. Diamond club is a nice perk, but it sounds like you have to stay on the butlers to get things done. The swim out suite allows the baby to play on the little shallow pad with his parents.
Lazy river looks great as does the swim up bar inside it. Reviews are hit or miss on food (a bit concerning). Those are followed by a good beach, good service, and good entertainment. We don't want him bored, but we are only staying 5 nights - so decent pools with a few things to do should keep him busy enough. Our second concern is activities for the 12 year old. Our main concern is good food (one has been to the DR several years ago and hated the food where he stayed, so going back to the DR is a huge concern for him). We will have a 2 year old and a 12 year old with us, along with their parents. Thought I was sold on Royalton Bavaro, Diamond Club, Swim Out Jr. As always, thank you for your ongoing support.Just when I think I have decided - I confuse myself more.

With respect to Hurricane Irma’s path towards the United States, we would like to continue to ensure guests are minimally affected by flight delays and cancellations. We want to thank our resort staff, partners and all local authorities for keeping our guests well informed, protected and calm during this time. The Puerto Plata Gregorio Luperon Airport (POP) is still currently closed with plans to reopen tomorrow morning. We are also happy to share, the Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) remains open and received no damage as a result of Hurricane Irma. AMResorts properties within the Dominican Republic experienced minor damage and are operating normally. Evacuated guests are currently being transported back to their rooms with the final group returning tomorrow afternoon. We are happy to report that all guests are safe and in the process of returning to their resort.
